How to get the Sound your Pastor Wants
Did you know Jesus had a sound person? Got your attention didn't it. We will get to that a little later in the article. For God to bring in the complete Worship experience He has to include sound. Why? Because "faith comes by hearing" ( Romans 10:17 ). No hearing, no faith. There is a biblical pattern for good sound mentioned in 1 Corithians 14; Paul mentions the importance of the distinction of the notes of a musical instrument and as such there has to be interpretation with tongues so that people can understand and respond and so be changed. Hearing and hearing with clarity will allow the Holy Spirit to do his work so that the heart of the people will respond. Remember in biblical days they had no sound systems, can you imagine preaching to 5000 with no sound system. Jesus realized the importance of acoustics so that his message could be heard. If you study the preaching of Jesus to the multitudes you always see a pattern, He always used the natural acoustics of the environment to amplify His voice. He either used a body of water or a valley, both natural amplifiers. Today between the preaching and the hearing stands two areas, which can make or break the service, electronic equipment and a sound person. No matter how much preparation is made for a service the most neglected area is usually sound. Note I said usually, today, especially with the rise of contemporary worship, churches have come to realize the importance of good sound. The two elements needed to get the sound your Pastor wants, a Good Sound System and a Qualified Sound Engineer, and they are equally as important. We will be dealing with each of those elements in upcoming articles. So, to answer the question posed at the beginning. "Did Jesus have a sound person?" I believe Jesus taught one of his disciples the principles of acoustics and the importance of the environment needed for His message to be heard. We know that he had specific members for specific roles as part of his crusade team. So even though the sound person is not mentioned by name, Jesus would not have neglected such an important aspect in His crusade preparation. In the subsequent months we will walk you through a number of areas dealing with sound, from the role of the sound person in worship to how to mix for sound; from signal flow to trouble shooting.
