Pianists from around the world converged in Fairbanks in May 2018 to compete in the prestigious 2018 Alaska International Piano-e-Competition for more than $65,000 in cash and prizes. From an initial round of 24 contestants, the top three finalists vied for the grand prize; however, over the 10-day competition, there were many other outstanding performances as well.
This special rebroadcast consists of the performance from Third Prize winner Su Yeon Kim of South Korea. Born in 1994, Su Yeon Kim began her piano studies at the age of 5 and studied at the Korean Institute for the Gifted in Arts and at the Korea National University of Arts. Since 2013, she has continued her studies with Professor Pavel Gililov at the University Salzburg Mozarteum.
She has been awarded top honors in notable competitions: 1st prize and special prize Fundacion Internacional Gomez-Martinez, Compositores de Espana Piano Competition; 1st prize, J. N. Hummel International Piano Competition in Bratislava; 2nd prize, Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition; gold prize, Asia Chopin International Piano Competition; and top prizes at International Tchaikovsky Competition for the Young Musicians and Minnesota International e-Piano Junior Competition. Su Yeon drew attention when she was a semifinalist at the 17th Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw and at Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
