William Winkle's Biography

Dr. William "Bill" Winkle retired from Chadron State College in the spring of 2005 after teaching 34 years at Chadron State College as the Director of Bands and Professor of Low Brass. Since then, has received the Professor Emeritus in Music at Chadron State College, the Founding Father award of the Chadron State College High Plains Choir and Band Festival and the Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association. He was also honored by his college/university colleagues for his leadership and dedication, was honored by the Nebraska Music Educators Association for 45 years of teaching music and was inducted into the University of Nebraska-Omaha Band Hall of Fame and the Nebraska Music Educators Association Hall of Fame.

Other awards include the Freedom Foundation Award as a tour director, conductor and soloist with European tours and the Distinguisher Service Award from the International Music Camp as a tuba instructor. William has been a tuba soloist and clinician throughout Europe, Canada and United States. He has freelanced with the Huron Symphony, Blue Jeans Philharmonic, Omaha Symphony, Wyoming Symphony, Black Hills Symphony, Nebraska Panhandle Symphony and Chamber as well as the Western Nebraska Chamber Players. William has been included in the Who's Who of the Midwest and the World, International Who's Who in Music, Men of Achievement of contributions in Music Education and personalities of America for distinguished service in Music Education.

William and Harvey Phillips are co-authors of The Art of Tuba and Euphonium published by Summy-Birchard, Inc. William has been a Performing Artist with the Yamaha Corporation since 1977. He has performed with the Chadron Arts Trio on the South Dakota and Nebraska Public Radio. He is a member of the International Brass Quintet.

He is active in many music organizations including Phi Beta Mu (Past President), International Tuba Euphonium Association (Life Member), Nebraska State Bandmasters Association (Past President), Kappa Kappa Psi (Life Member), National Band Association (Past State Chair), Nebraska State Music Educators Association (Past Collegiate Chair) and Concert Bands of America. He is also a member of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Legion of Honor Committee.
