Wayne Bovenschen is in his 31st year serving as Associate Professor of Percussion at Oklahoma State University (OSU). In this capacity, he directs the Concert Percussion Ensemble and Marching Percussion Ensemble, teaches studio lessons and percussion techniques and is sponsor of the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Prior to 2015, he also served as Assistant Director of Bands for 28 years, where he was the Assistant Director of the Cowboy Marching Band and directed the OSU Spirit Bands at men's and women's basketball games. A graduate of Michigan State University, Bovenschen holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in Applied Percussion.
In 2014, the OSU Concert Percussion Ensemble was invited to perform a Showcase Concert at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis, IN. This marked the second time OSU had been invited to perform at PASIC, the first occurring in 1996 in Nashville, TN. The OSU Marching Percussion Ensemble was also invited in 2011 as one of three university drumlines to present a concert at PASIC in Indianapolis, IN. In previous years, this group has also competed in the PASIC Marching Percussion Forum six times, placing as high as second in 2001 and 2012.
Since 2005, Bovenschen has served as the Music Director for the Stillwater Community Band (SCB). During the summer of 2016, the SCB performed on the USS Missouri as part of the Festival of States on July 4th in commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In January 2011, this ensemble was invited to perform at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OMEA) State Convention in Tulsa, OK. Bovenschen has also conducted high school and junior high honor bands throughout Oklahoma.
As an arranger, Bovenschen has written over 400 percussion scores for high school and college marching bands and drum & bugle corps across the country. He has also written full band arrangements and drill for college bands in Oklahoma and Texas and has been published by Drop6 Media and Arrangers Publishing, Inc.
When not serving as an educator for junior high, high school and university level students, Bovenschen has been the drummer for the MORGAN band since 2011, based in Stillwater, OK. The EP Light the Match, recorded in 2013, is available on various streaming services including iTunes and Spotify.
Bovenschen's prior university teaching experience includes roles as Percussion Instructor for the Michigan State University Spartan Marching Band and Percussion Instructor for Lansing Community College. He has performed with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and the Cavaliers and Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps. Bovenschen is a member of the Percussive Arts Society, serving as a member of the International Percussion Ensemble Committee and twice as president of the Oklahoma Chapter. He has also been a member of CBDNA, MENC, International Association of Rudimental Percussionists, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and proudly endorses Yamaha Percussion, Vic Firth Sticks & Mallets and Remo Drum Heads.
