Tim Zachery hails from Alexandria, Louisiana. After graduating from Peabody Magnet High School in Alexandria, Dr. Zachery moved on to the lights and notoriety that came with performing in the famed Southern University Marching Band in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While there, he was able to rub elbows with and learn from hometown greats like Dr. Isaac Greggs, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Herman Jackson and famous New Orleans Jazz musician Alvin Baptiste. He thrived under the artistic influences of trumpeters Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Terrance Blanchard. After a brief assignment in the United States Navy Band, Zachery went on to obtain his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Norfolk State University, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the prestigious Indiana University and American Conservatory of Music.
Dr. Zachery is skilled in all genres of music. He was a trumpet performer and soloist with the Virginia Symphony. He has performed with The Virginia Beach Symphony, The David Baker Big Band, The Right On! Band, The Great American Music Ensemble and the Atlantic Fleet Jazz Band, Concert Band, Ceremonial Band and Show Band. He has also performed with notable artists such as Natalie Cole and The Temptations.
For the past years, Dr. Zachery has served as special guest clinician with the Bahamian Police Force Band in Nassau, Bahamas where he spends weeks working with police band members, as well as their young musician mentees. Some of the talented members of the Bahamian Police Force and its mentorship program, Urban Renewal, are now college students studying with Dr. Zachery at Prairie View A&M University.
While Instructor of Music and Assistant Band Director at Norfolk State University, Dr. Zachery was conductor of the NSU Trumpet Ensemble and worked with the NSU Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Brass Ensemble and Jazz Combo. Since becoming Director of Bands at Prairie View A&M University, he has focused his students on achieving even more success for the “Marching Storm”, the PVAMU Wind Ensemble, and the various musical ensembles that make up the Department of Music at Prairie View. From overseeing feature performances at professional football games, televised parades and music conferences, to serving as one of Prairie View’s ambassadors for recruitment, Dr. Zachery remains focused on providing the best educational experience possible for his students. Most notably, several of his students have been recognized for their outstanding academic and musical performance through their selection and appointment to various military performing units.
Dr. Zachery’s discography includes selections by composer Adolphus Hailstork with the Virginia Symphony, O Sacred Head, Now Wounded with the I. Sherman Greene Chorale and big band selections with the Atlantic Fleet Navy Band.
