Yamaha Artists Dominate 48th Annual Grammy Nominations

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (December 12, 2005) — When the 48th Annual Grammy nominations were announced last week, Yamaha artists were recognized multiple times and across many different musical genres. Topping the nominations was Yamaha artist and newcomer John Legend with eight, tying with fellow eight-time nominees Mariah Carey and Kanye West.

Legend, whose debut Get Lifted has been certified platinum, was nominated for Song of the Year ("Ordinary People"), Best New Artist, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance ("Ordinary People"), Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals ("So High" featuring Lauryn Hill), Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance ("Stay With You"), Best R&B Song ("Ordinary People"), Best R&B Album (Get Lifted) and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("They Say" by Common Featuring Kanye West and Legend).

Garnering six nominations was Yamaha artist Stevie Wonder, five of those from his recently released album A Time to Love, his first studio album in more than 10 years. Wonder's nominations included: Best R&B Album, Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals ("A Time to Love" with India.Arie), Best Male R&B Vocal Performance ("So What The Fuss"), Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("From The Bottom Of My Heart"), and two nominations in the Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocals ("How Will I Know" featuring Wonder's daughter Aisha Morris and from the So Amazing – An All Star Tribute to Luther Vandross CD the song "So Amazing" with Beyoncé).

Yamaha artist Alicia Keys, whose latest Unplugged CD marked her third straight number one album debut, was honored with five nominations: Best R&B Album, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance ("If I Was Your Woman"), Best Female R&B Vocal Performance ("Unbreakable"), Best R&B Song ("Unbreakable"), and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals ("If This World Were Mine" with Jermaine Paul from the CD So Amazing – An All Star Tribute to Luther Vandross).

The legendary Paul McCartney, a Yamaha piano artist, was nominated for the coveted Album of the Year with Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. Other McCartney nominations were for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("Fine Line") and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Yamaha artist Sheryl Crow's latest CD Wildflower did not go unnoticed by Grammy as well. Her album was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and the single "Good is Good" earned her a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Crow's unique collaboration with Brooks & Dunn and Vice Gill earned her another nomination in the Best Country Collaboration With Vocals category for "Building Bridges."

Coldplay, with Chris Martin playing Yamaha pianos and Will Champion on Yamaha drums, was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal ("Speed of Sound"), Best Rock Song ("Speed of Sound"), and Best Rock Album (X&Y).

Eight-time Grammy Award winner and Yamaha artist Norah Jones has a chance to add two more Grammys to her collection with some unique collaborations this year. She is nominated for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for the song "Virginia Moon" with the Foo Fighters and for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for "Dreams Come True" with country legend Willie Nelson.

Nominated for his thirteenth Grammy, Yamaha artist Eddie Palmieri could add to his already impressive collection of seven wins with a nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album for Listen Here!. With his 50-year career as a bandleader of salsa and Latin jazz coming full circle, Palmieri won the very first Grammy in the Best Latin Album category in 1975.

Yamaha Gospel artists were well represented this year with a nomination going to Michael W. Smith for Healing Rain in the Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. Two Yamaha artists are in the Best Gospel Performance category with Kirk Franklin nominated with "Looking for You" and CeCe Winans for "Pray." Winans was also nominated for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album with Purified.

In the music video categories Yamaha artist Sarah McLachlan was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video ("World on Fire") and Brian Wilson for Best Long Form Music Video ("Brian Wilson Presents Smile"). Also among the many Yamaha artists nominated was newcomer Keane for Best New Artist, who will go head to head with fellow Yamaha artist Legend. The 48th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).
