Michael Kingan is Emeritus Professor of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and was Director of Percussion Studies from 2003 to 2021. He conducted the IUP Percussion Ensemble, which can be heard on their album Opus Pocus and the IUP Percussion Ensemble "Homegrown Video Projects", which features compositions and arrangements by his students and alumni. He holds degrees from the University of North Texas (DMA), University of Cincinnati (MM), and Ohio State University (BME).
Prior to this appointment, he held positions at Louisiana State University and Texas Christian University. He was also the percussion specialist at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas and a high school band director in Harlingen, Texas.
Dr. Kingan has freelanced and collaborated as a drummer and percussionist in the Columbus, Cincinnati, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Baton Rouge/New Orleans, and western-PA areas, performing with symphonies in all the cities mentioned. He has served on the faculties of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and the Stephen F. Austin Percussion Symposium. As a soloist, chamber musician, or conductor, he has performed or presented presentations at PASIC, PMEA, LMEA, MENC, NACWPI, and ITG National Symposiums.
Dr. Kingan has participated in numerous Keystone Wind Ensemble recording projects, has toured and recorded with the Atlantic Brass Quintet, and performed with the chamber group Pastiche. His articles have been published in the PAS, MENC, and NACWPI journals and the Yamaha Education Packets.
