James Hicks's Biography

James Hicks is in demand as both an educator and performer.

Hicks is currently Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Towson University, where he teaches private lessons and masterclasses, performs with the faculty brass quintet and conducts the tuba and euphonium ensemble. Highly respected by industry professionals, he has presented lectures at international, regional and state conferences. He has also taught clinics at numerous universities, colleges and grade schools throughout the country.

Hicks is a strong advocate for the tuba, having served on the Board of Directors for the International Tuba and Euphonium Association from 2015-2017. He has presented lectures at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference, adjudicated the Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium Festival and written articles for the International Tuba Journal.

An active performer, Hicks is currently Principal Tuba of a premiere wind ensemble in Washington, D.C. and is a member of various chamber ensembles. He has performed with many orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has been a featured soloist with the United States Navy Band, at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference and at the United States Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Conference.

Hicks received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Georgia and a Master of Music from DePaul University. His primary teachers include David Zerkel, Floyd Cooley and Gene Pokorny.
