Ed Soph is recognized internationally as an author, teacher, and musician. The author of three books and co-author of the acclaimed instructional video, "The Drumset: A Musical Approach," Ed has presented masterclasses in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Canada, and the Near and Far East as well as innumerable clinics and workshops, music festivals, and conventions throughout the United States.
As a performer and recording artist Ed has been associated with the big bands of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Bill Watrous, and Clark Terry. Small group credits include Bobby Shew, Joe Henderson, Joe LoCascio, David Liebman, Marvin Stamm, Carl Fontana, Cedar Walton, and Clark Terry. Ed's clinics draw upon his experience as a performer and as a teacher of over 30 years. His insights into rhythmic improvisation, the art of practicing, stylistic concepts, technical principles, and fundamental aspect of musicality on the drumset make his presentations uniquely informative and practical.
Ed is Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Texas. He continues to perform and record, most notable with groups led by pianist Stefan Karlsson, bassist John Adams, and as co-leader with trumpeter Marvin Stamm in a group including pianist Bill Mays and bassist Rufus Reid.
Ed endorses and plays Yamaha drums, Zildjian cymbals and sticks (Ed Soph Artist Series Acoustic Combo drumstick), Evans drumheads, and Regal Tip/Calato brushes.
