Acclaimed by International Trombone Journal for his "warm sound, beautiful phrasing, and ability to perform in various styles," Chris Glassman is a rising star in jazz. As a bass trombonist, Director of Jazz at Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Michigan-based musician, Glassman's impact on the jazz scene continues to grow.
Born in Littleton, Colorado, Glassman’s musical journey began at five with drums, transitioning to trombone in grade school. He earned his bachelor’s in classical trombone performance from the University of Denver and his master’s degree in jazz studies at Michigan State University under Michael Dease and Rodney Whitaker.
During his master's program (2017-2019), Glassman dominated the competition circuit, becoming a finalist or winner in every major U.S. international jazz trombone competition, a feat accomplished on Bass Trombone. His accolades include recognition at the International Trombone Festival's competitions, American Trombone Workshop, Curtis Fuller International Competition, and UNT Jazz Trombone Day Competition.
As a bandleader, Glassman has released four acclaimed recordings. His latest album, The Technocats - The Music of Gregg Hill, ranked as the 18th most played jazz record internationally in 2023. He's also featured on recordings by Rodney Whitaker, Ulysses Owens Jr., and Walter White.
Glassman's arranging skills have earned him numerous commissions, including works for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival film Radical, Jazz Houston, the USAF Airmen of Note, Brevard Music Center, and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. He's also been commissioned by notable musicians Diane Reeves, David Sanborn, Steve Davis, and Rodney Whitaker.
Prior to working at Interlochen, Glassman was on faculty at Michigan State University, Brevard Music Center, and Saginaw Valley State University. He's given masterclasses at institutions like the University of North Texas, Ohio State University, and the New Trier Jazz Festival. Glassman has been a featured guest artist at the International Trombone Festival, Midatlantic Jazz Festival, and Summer Solstice Jazz Festival.
Currently, as Director of Jazz at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Glassman continues to inspire the next generation of jazz musicians at the world's premiere boarding arts school and legendary summer camp.
When not performing, teaching, or arranging, Glassman enjoys board games with his wife Christine, reading, and doting on his cats, Muffin and Dobby. With his exceptional talent, dedication to education, and ongoing contributions to the jazz world, Glassman stands as a shining example of the modern jazz musician and educator.
