Caleb Chapman's incredibly unique combination of skills as a producer, educator, author and performer have marked him as a rapidly rising star in the music industry, and his impact is being felt at the global level.
Caleb's bands, comprised of musicians ages 8-18, are regarded as some of the finest in the world. Utah Governor Gary Herbert presented Caleb with the prestigious 2013 Governor's Performing Artist Award, given to one artist annually for significant contributions to art in Utah. Caleb's bands have received a combined 65 DownBeat awards since 2005 and have shared the stage with over 200 guest artists, including Grammy Award-winners Branford Marsalis, Kirk Whalum, Gordon Goodwin, Joe Lovano, Poncho Sanchez, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, David Sanborn, Nicholas Payton, Esperanza Spalding, Eric Marienthal, Dave Weckl, Ernie Watts, Peter Erskine and Dave Samuels. They also have performed and/or recorded with members of well-known bands such as Maroon 5, Dave Matthews Band, Journey, Genesis, Toto, The Killers, AC/DC, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Tower of Power, The Rolling Stones and the Saturday Night Live Band.
Caleb's flagship ensemble, the Crescent Super Band, has a long list of performance credits that includes many of the world's most prestigious music festivals in Cuba, China, Scotland, Mexico, England, Germany, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and more. The group has filled a headliner spot at the Jazz Education Network Conference on multiple occasions and has previously performed at The Midwest Clinic and the International Society for Music Education Conference. In May 2013, the band made its headlining debut at Carnegie Hall to a packed house.
In 2011, Caleb was named the John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year, one of the highest honors in music education. Age 37 at the time, he was by far the youngest to ever receive this honor. Additionally, Caleb has been named Utah's "Best Educator" (2011) and "Best Music Educator" (2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018) by Utah Best of State. Caleb was a national semi-finalist for the 2015 and 2016 Grammy Music Educator Award, and he has served as President for the Jazz Education Network (JEN), the world's leading organization for jazz education and advocacy. Caleb was invited to be the director of the prestigious 2014 Jazz Band of America in Indianapolis, IN and also in 2014, was appointed by Utah Governor Gary Herbert to serve as the music representative on the Utah Arts Council Board of Directors. His appointment was ratified by a unanimous vote by the Utah State Senate.
Caleb's book The Articulate Jazz Musician (written with Dave Matthews Band saxophonist and multi-Grammy Award-winner Jeff Coffin) was released by Alfred Music in January 2013 and has sold upwards of 10,000 copies. Caleb also has written for DownBeat magazine, JAZZed Magazine and Hal Leonard.
Caleb is an active saxophonist and a fixture in the Utah scene, where he fronts his own band with David Osmond, the Osmond Chapman Orchestra. In 2017, Caleb toured as a member of the multi-platinum selling Neon Trees. He has performed the National Anthem on solo saxophone at NBA games for the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards and Utah Jazz. His playing is featured on recordings by dozens of artists, including the Grammy Award-winning DJ, Kaskade; The National Parks; and others.
Caleb is an artist and clinician for Yamaha Saxophones, D'Addario Reeds, JodyJazz Mouthpieces, Alfred Music and Planet Waves Cables.
