Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, drummer/composer/band leader Dafnis Prieto began his career with the bands of Cuban stars like Carlos Maza and Ramon Valle. Since arriving in New York in 1999, he has worked with Steve Coleman, Henry Threadgill, Eddie Palmieri, Andrew Hill, and Michel Camilo, to name a few. In The New York Times last year, Ben Ratliff praised Dafnis Prieto's debut album, About The Monks (Zoho Music, 2005), as "some of the best of New York's new Latin-jazz movement, distinguished by complex, jaggedly modern writing, but also by a deep culútural literacy of Cuban folklore."
